Don’t Worry, Be Sexy

 Artist Statement

Human bodies are imperfect, but beautiful. We don’t get to choose the body we are born with. My exhibition Don’t Worry, Be Sexy explores the beauty and comedy in bodily features and functions. I find myself constantly observing those around me and finding appreciation in each person. I’m charmed by eye crinkles when someone smiles, callused hands, stretch marks on an ass, chub on a belly, someone picking their nose. My favorite is a good bruise.

I often work with live models who pose in unflattering positions with critical lighting, and I make no embellishments. I paint every curve, roll, and asymmetrical flaw to show the beauty I see in them. If you look close enough, each body reveals a history and a deeper understanding of who a person is.

Throughout my life I have struggled to accept my own body and it’s everchanging traits. I look at other people who experience the same insecurities and wonder why they can’t appreciate what I see. I’ve learned through my art that if I can’t find humility in my body then I will never discover the appreciation that I need for myself. Embracing the crude elements of a living and aging body is a necessary ingredient for building self-confidence. No one should feel ashamed of a booger or a sweat stain.
